Do you know how important pictures are when
blogging?
Look at the picture in this post (if you haven’t done it yet)
Now tell me, where did you look, right or left?
Most of the people look right because the arrow is pointing right. Only after a few seconds they realise the arrow and the command “Look left” are opposites.
This is quick exercise proves how important images are. Our eyes focus on a picture way faster than our logic starts working.
Images are very important when we talk about conversion rates because you can drive your reader’s attention the way you want. That’s why marketers have researched extensively about it the last decades.
I am not an expert in Neuroscience but here’s another tip I’ve learned and experimented myself:
People look at people’s eyes… and then move
Readers focus on people’s eyes in the first glance. That’s why it’s very useful to add a picture of a person to your post.
After a while the attention moves to the picture’s eye gaze direction. Knowing this you can highlight specific content in your blog.
You only have to include a picture of someone looking towards that content.
See a popular example:
The first picture makes you focus on the brand name (red color in the heatmap). Can you see the difference with the second one?
A Chinise proverb comes to my mind when I see this ad:
“When a finger points to the moon, the imbecile looks at the finger”
The rest look at the moon.
When the eyes point to a text the viewer reads the text. When they point to a product the viewer looks to the product.
Let’s make another try
Are you convinced about the power of pictures? In case you’re not, here we go again.
Look at this picture:
Have you checked your keyboard? I bet at least you felt tempted
Your turn…
- What do you think about the use of images to reinforce a message?
- Do you know any other examples like the ones in the post?
- How do you use images in your blog, sales letters, niche sites, etc?
I'm Cristina. I am a 32 year-old entrepreneur. In the last 3 years I've learnt -the hard way- that in order to build a successful business and make money online first you have to conquer your own mind. In this blog I share with you how to do it.

Just for the record, this article has been a victim of a terrible coincidence.
Life can be very unfair sometimes.
I must say having been on the computer every day for most of my life I still checked my keyboard! Very powerful. Makes me want to take the design on my blog even more seriously now, not just the images
I must say, I love your writing style!

Something must be wrong. According to Mailchimp reports you have been sent at least one email from me.
I hope it didn’t go to your spam folder.

Really love the Chinese Proverb. Nice little article too. I will be returning.
Cheers.
Thanks Cal. I’m glad you like it!
Hi Cristina, I love Neuroscience type stuff. Always love how dumb and predictable it makes me feel:)
Couple of things to add that I read in a Neuroscience book.
1. Our brains prefer images to be on the left hand side and text on the right. So most people should subconsciously feel more at ease with blog posts, if the pictures are left of centre.
Don’t know if it makes much difference but it’s interesting to try and notice which feels intuitively better to you when you visit other blogs.
2. People linger and spend more time looking at “ambiguous” faces than any other type. So a picture with a Mona Lisa type of expression. Will get stared at, much longer than an obviously happy or sad face.
So if you want to stop people clicking away so fast, use pictures of hard to read faces:) Seems we just have an inbuilt need to try and figure out what emotional state other people are in.
I love neuroscience stuff too.
About pics on the left or centre instead of on the right, I’m not so sure. Some people say it’s better on the right. By now I’m going to keep mine on that side
There are lots of good reasons to include pictures in articles, blog posts, in fact in almost any communication.
Including a picture at the start of a blog post makes the first few lines shorter and thus easier and quicker to read. This makes it easier for the reader to engage with the subject and helps pull them in to read the rest.
Thanks for such a great comment Lesley.
Btw, I love your blog
There is a saying ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ – You have verified this popular saying by this well written article.
Now time for confession – I did check my keyboard
That’s so true!
Thanks for your comment Sam.
Cristina,
Great point. Pictures are absolutely powerful and can make the point often much better than words.
This has been true for thousands o years and will likely only continue to grow more true as people desire more and more instant gratification and knowledge.
I will admit you caught me twice too. I looked “right” on the “look left” picture…. and I also looked at my computer (at least thinking, “I don’t -think- the letters are arranged that way”)

Thanks Steve! I’m super stoked about having you commenting on my blog. So far nobody has said “I didn’t get caught”
This was great. I looked right, and a split second later I thought… left is the other way.

Good stuff! Images are very important and it’s always fun to see their effects. G
Thanks Violet!
I have been using photos on one of my blogs lately. It’s a city blog, and I’m using photos I’ve taken locally.
I haven’t been optimizing them in the way that you describe above. But I have found that just putting them there on the blog seems to lift the post’s rankings a bit. I think Google just gives you a couple of cool points for including a photo, or something!

Hi Matt,
Definitely it’s very important to add pictures to your blog posts. They are visually enticing and yes, I also think Google likes them. Don’t forget to include the alternate text (Google can read it)
Hey Cristina,
Yes, I looked right and, although I knew it was wrong (QWERTY keyboard), I did glance down – “just to be sure”.
Images are very important for blog posts. They are more likely to be clicked upon if they are positioned on the left by all accounts.
